Ultimate Rope Lights Guide (17 Important Facts)

I could’t FIGURE OUT how to use rope lights for the longest time.

And I couldn’t find answers since there were no blogs about this topic.

That’s part of why I wrote this article so that other people won’t have to go through hours of researching to find an answer.

1. Are Rope Lights Waterproof?

In most models, they are water-resistant.

To find out if your LED rope light is waterproof or not, check if it is rated IP65. Products certified with this rating type are dust-proof, oil-proof, and free from any corrosive material.

However, they are not entirely waterproof. It means that you can’t submerge them in the water. (Plus, it’s not an intelligent thing to do) But if it were exposed to a few splashes, the rope light would still function. They are water-resistant but not waterproof.

2. Can Rope Lights Go Underwater?

No. They would survive for a reasonable duration when accidentally exposed to any liquid material.

Still, it’s not advised to place them beneath the water for prolonged use.

3. Are Rope Lights Battery Operated?

Most rope lights are powered through a socket, but other models use 3AA batteries to function.

Check to see if your rope lights use an adapter to power-up, if not. It is a good sign that they are battery-operated.

If the manufacturer says that the rope light is waterproof, the battery case and wire are also water-resistant. They would still operate well during rainy days.

4. Are Rope Lights Dimmable?

Not all rope lights are dimmable; only a few models are, such as an incandescent one.

They could also be customized into rolls or placed across the room’s corners to bring a natural design display. Most rope lights can be as long as 250 ft, leaving your imagination to do what it wants.

Lastly, they serve as the perfect Christmas decoration. Spin them around the tree, which will help light up the atmosphere. But once Christmas is over, you can still reuse them to light up some area of your home at night.

6. Are Rope Lights Bright?

It depends on where you plan to use them. They are bright enough to decorate your balcony at night but not bright enough to replace your everyday lighting.

Rope lights are generally safe when exposed to soft water unless you submerge them.

In terms of being a fire hazard, they would be vulnerable to fire when they are located in areas with extreme humidity, and the rope light is placed outside. You can prevent this by inspecting the ends of the wiring to see if it is coated in green rust or if there are any signs of burnt ends.

However, risks are minimized if the rope light is made of waterproof materials. Because of its design, they would offer protection against humidity.

8. Can Rope Light Be Used Outside?

Yes, they can be used outside on your porch or backyard. But you would want to constantly inspect them every three months to check for any possible problems.

9. What Type Of Rope Light Can You Cut?

Incandescent rope lights are one of the few types that you can cut. You must first check if your rope light has a cutting line, usually represented by small dots that run across the rope light.

If there is one type of rope light you don’t want to slice accidentally, are the rope light kits.

10. What You Should Do When Rope Light Is Not Working?

If this happens, you want to check if the pin connections are inserted well.

In most cases, a rope light would not turn on since there is a lousy pin connection. To fix this, you need to check whether the pin is located in the center and that it meets the internal wiring.

“Another possible explanation is that it wasn’t cut appropriately through the designated marked lines.”

You could try using a wire cutter to slice the area instead of plain scissors properly.

Next, you would want to check if the power source is the problem. It should meet the required wattage of your rope light.  A rope light that receives the wrong wattage means that your wiring is fried, rendering it unusable.

But if there is one rope light that may resemble a light source, it would be the flat rope light that reaches a tape light. It is generally bright enough to shine in one area. Compared to a light bulb, it won’t operate on equal levels. Nonetheless, flat rope light is the closest variation to lighting up one area.

12. How to make rope light splash resistant?

You would need to cut the rope into the precise measurements you’ll need. Then proceed by securing shrink-wrap on the ends of the string. It will help prevent water from seeping in.

Just like that, you have a rope light that is ready to be used under the water.

Rope lights have their fair share of downsides, one of which is yellowing.

If exposed to the sun, you would typically see your plastic tubes turn yellow over time. Since they are made of plastic tubes, they are only natural to yellow when exposed to UV rays.

One of the main disadvantages of rope lights is that they can be challenging to install. Rope lights are installed by attaching to a surface using adhesive tape or zip ties. It can be challenging, especially if you don’t have much experience working with lights.

Another disadvantage of rope lights is that they can be less durable than other lights. Rope lights are often made from plastic, which can be susceptible to damage from weather or wear and tear. It means that rope lights may not last as long as other lights, such as LED lights.

It can be one of the more expensive types of lights available. This is because rope lights often come in longer lengths than other lights. The longer the size of the rope light, the more expensive it will be.

Next, they have below-average brightness. Besides using it as an ornament, there are no other uses. Any person could try to use it as a light source, but it will only damage their eyes over the long run.

Lastly, most rope lights can only be bent to a certain extent until they won’t work anymore. You would want to inspect the corner’s length before softening the lights ahead of time. Cutting the rope lights is another option if you don’t want to bend the rope light forcibly.
